Sakura Sushi and Grill offers a full-service Japanese dining experience nestled in a lively part of Albuquerque’s Riverside Plaza. This spot draws a crowd looking for authentic sushi alongside classic Japanese grill dishes, making it suitable for everything from casual dinners to group celebrations.

The atmosphere is relaxed yet engaging, with an open kitchen where cooks often interact with diners, adding a playful, personable touch to the meal. It’s a place where families and friends gather, and the energy tends to pick up during dinner hours and weekends when the restaurant fills with chatter and the occasional laughter from kids watching the chefs’ entertaining prep.

Menu highlights include a broad sushi selection—from California and Dragon rolls to premium sashimi dinners—and hot dishes like Bulgogi and Chicken Teriyaki. Those who appreciate fresh, well-prepared fish will find plenty to enjoy, especially if ordering one of the large sushi boats or specialty rolls like the Tempura Lobster or Lemon Roll. Vegetarians may find options limited but well-considered, with items like edamame and select veggie sushi thoughtfully prepared and presented.

Visitors often note the clean, inviting interior that hints at traditional Japanese aesthetics without feeling overly formal, creating a welcoming spot for both sushi veterans and those new to Japanese cuisine. The staff tends to be knowledgeable and attentive, guiding guests through the menu and accommodating dietary preferences carefully, which adds to the overall sense of care.

For dessert, the Tempura Ice Cream and fruity mochi stand out as satisfying, sweet finishes to the meal. Pairing sushi with a cup of dessert tea or sake also seems to be a common choice among locals enjoying a full-course experience.

Sakura Sushi and Grill works well for locals wanting a consistent, quality sushi night out, families looking for friendly service and kid-friendly moments, and anyone who appreciates a casual atmosphere where the cooks become part of the dining entertainment. Early evenings or weekend dinners capture the liveliest vibes, while weekday lunches offer a quieter chance to enjoy fresh sushi with fewer crowds.

As a vegitarian they only have a couple options as far as sushi is concerned, but those options are delicious! The staff is very friendly and it has a great atmosphere. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable and was very forthcoming about what we were able to and not able to eat as vegitarians so we appreciated her for that. It was crazy busy but worth the wait. Give it a try!

You simply cannot put a price on a good dining experience. I enjoyed the casual vibe that the restaurant had - everybody was having a good time. Our cook in particular seemingly went out of his way to give us a good experience, talking to us and playing little games as he cooked. Aside from those in my party, we also ate with a small family who had two kids and they couldn't get enough of our cook who kept making them laugh, and in turn, kept us in our high spirits. I will come back again, because these types of dining experiences don't just leave your stomach full, but leave your heart full as well.

IMO, the best sushi restaurant in the Albuquerque area. I have gone dozens of times and have never once been disappointed. The food is amazing, the service is beyond welcoming and friendly, and the atmosphere is inviting. The chefs put out flawless entrees and appetizers. It's worth the drive if you live on the other side of town (or even the mountains) if you want the best sushi money can buy.

This is our favorite sushi place. We’ve been coming to this place for years now. Sushis are always good and fresh. The restaurant itself is clean and it has a nice Japany ambiance. Joy the owner and her staff are very nice, friendly, and welcoming. Pink lady and the yellow tail are the best! Don’t forget to get that fried ice-cream for your dessert. It’s killer!

Five stars across the board. Other family members of mine have always raved about this place, and I finally got to enjoy it this evening. The sushi was excellent, the sake was tip-top, and the service was absolutely phenomenal. Like a TRUE family restaurant. It’s a favorite now, and I can’t wait to be back. (Yes, my nephew in the photo went STRAIGHT for the stack of ginger in the photo.)

What I got: - Miso soup: Everyone gets this! - "Rainbow" sushi roll: crab salad and avocado inside. - "Pink lady" sushi roll: immitation crab salad/mix (was sweet-ish, has a little gluten in it, btw), cucumber, avocado, green sprouts, wrapped in tuna (no rice or seaweed). It was very good! - Edamame: your typical. - Green tea with toasted brown rice: this is a specific green tea mix, which has the green tea leaves plus roasted brown rice pieces, steeped then strained - it was so good!! And after I asked for a refill, the waitress brought me a small pot of it to do my own refills :) Very nice! - Dessert tea: Everyone gets this! It's very good! Ginger, cinnamon, sugar... just a small sampling of it, as a finisher. - I really appreciated that their menu had photos for every item! - Staff was easy to communicate with. - They had gluten free soy sauce, and marked on their menu which items were gluten free, or spicey. Very helpful.

They have so much more than sushi. The menu was at least 5 pages. Went with a group. Everyone enjoyed what they got. It was all so fresh. I had shrimp tempura. I got soup first. My plate had rice and mixed veggies that was cooked perfectly. The shrimp had just the right amount of batter. Delicious. After we ate we were given a sweet tea. I will be back
